Thanks for your comments. Ya, the difficulty up here in Canada is selection. Those are pretty much the ONLY non-mainstream zins we get around here. Plus, we can't sell wine in grocery stores ;). All the prices are what I paid up here for the wines.

Turley is less overpriced in Canada because we don't have markups based on the status of the winery - they are standardized across the board. This makes the Turley the same price as the Elyse, for example. So up here the prices are actually very close to each other and maybe goes to show that pricing doesn't have everything to do with quality!! :D

Good idea for a post, but poor execution. Sorry, I had to chime in as a Zin lover and collector. The problems I have are: 1st you should have done Sonoma vs. Paso Robles... never been a huge fan of Napa Zins (there are some good ones). 2nd the comprasion of selected wines is like apple and oranges. I don't know about the pricing of wines up in Canada but in California your pricing was way off.
Turley $40- over priced winery
Elyse $25- good pick
Hendry $30- never tried
Here is where I fault you
St Francis "Old Vines" $20 at most- also a grocery store wine... poor pick
Seghesio- $32- decent grocery store wine....
Ridge Lytton Springs... what vintage? The 05 is awesome- $30
I find it hard to compare a $20 wine vs. $30+ wine.
Sorry to be a Debbie Downer... try some Paso Zins next time... Four Vines Dusi (Turley makes a Dusi, but charges twice as much... the Dusi's are also starting to make there own wines.) Sausal makes a great hard to find wine "Century Vines" in Sonoma. Also wines from the Rockpile AVA are awesome.

Thanks for the recommendation. Are you referring to the Dry Creek vineyard or the Dry Creek valley generally? Unfortunately we cannot get Dry Creek Vineyard (nor that much from Dry Creek Valley) up here in Vancouver. However, next time I take a trip down to Seattle or San Francisco I will look for it.

Excellent zin post, thanks... from everything I have read and tasted lately, the old vine zin from Dry Creek in particular is a benchmark... I happen to be on a "blend" kick at the moment, but might I suggest?:

Gamba!

here is a great pdf link re: old vine zin and the winery

Thanks. Well we had about 10 people total. So, not enough wine perhaps, but I also didn't say the evening ended with the tasting :).

Ya, I hadn't had that much zin before this tasting so it was really interesting to try that many in concert. Hopefully you'll get to host a tasting soon!

Really excellent post. It's been a dream of mine to host a wine tasting such as the one you described.

You had six bottles total--how many people were there? (Hopefully six or less!)

Of all the major California varietals, I have to say I have the least experience with zins. This is a shame, as it seems I'm missing out!

Joon @
http://vinicultured.com
