Pisano Tannat 2005
Having never tasted a tannat before, I was excited when given this bottle as a gift from a friend for my birthday. Uruguay has apparently managed to turn this almost undrinkable grape into something resembling real wine. Tannat has traditionally been used in France as a blending grape because of its dark colour and extreme tannins.
Here we had a wine with quite an intriguing nose of smoky bbq, charred meat, wood smoke, mushrooms, earth, herbs and a hint of mint. The palate continued the very smoky bbq notes, along with salami and blackberry. This really was insanely tannic, but the depth of flavour managed to hold it all together.
