Scubla Lo Speziale Bianco Ribolla & Malvasia 2010
Wines from Friuli are hard to find in any quantity. They are also often on the expensive side. I like them, however, because they are usually interesting, well made wines and because the best producers focus on indigenous grapes.
This white blend from Scubla exemplifies all the things I love about Friulian wine at half the price. Made with 45% Malvasia, 45% Ribolla and 10% Friulano, this wine is texturally lush and impressive. Fresh grass, mineral and tang provide considerable interest in this lifted wine that is made for seafood and sushi. Length with fat, freshness with balance, it’s all here. While this will not challenge your intellect or inspire poetic oratory, this exemplifies what great mid-week wine is all about. And here’s betting you’ll drink the whole bottle without noticing.
