This is not profound wine, but it does demonstrate what small, thoughtful producers can do with indigenous Italian grapes. Made in Tuscany with the indigenous grapes Foglia Tonda, Barsaglina, Colorino and Sangiovese, this is highly expressive, rich, fruity wine derived entirely from the quality of the fruit rather than any cellar wizardry. It is raised in 100% steel tank, and drinks very cleanly.
The fruit tastes modern, though unique – highly brambly and red fruited, there is a key funky element here that some will enjoy and others will likely find so-so. Suitable for a variety of richer Italian foods, it doesn’t quite have the high toned acid-driven glory of great Sangiovese, so it is less of a wine for tomato and more for game and sausage.
