Domaine de la Pépière Pepie Bulles n/v

photoThe Loire Valley makes far too much delicious, affordable wine for anyone’s good. It’s near impossible for other regions to compete with its diversity, quality and downright silly pricing.

One of my favourite Loire domaines is Domaine de la Pépière, a top producer from Nantais that makes amazing and very well priced wines suitable for far more than the stereotypical oysters pairing. Beyond the classic Muscadet white, Pepiere makes an excellent red from Cab Franc, Sauv and Malbec and this wonderful little 9.5% ABV sparkling from mostly Melon de Bourgogne and a small amount of Chardonnay.

The Pepie Bulles is a fabulous wine. It’s not particularly complex, but its simplicity, a very well-made simplicity, is its charm. I rarely love sparkling wine beyond Champagne, but have no issues greatly appreciating this wine’s green apple, citrus, salt, minerals and some yeastyness. It’s got great up front flavour even if the mid-palate and finish collapse. You can’t expect more for this price.
