Monteraponi Vin Santo del Chianti Classico 2005

Posted by

Vin Santo. One of the great dessert wines of the world and relegated to the back shelf with the half bottles of oddball sweet wines that no one looks at.

Monteraponi are a traditionalist producer in Chianti Classico who make extremely compelling wines, especially their top single vineyards. Their Vin Santo is a beautiful, classically made version of this great Tuscan dessert wine. It exemplifies why Italian dessert wines may in many respects be the world’s most food friendly – their bitterness. Unlike the unctuous ports of Portugal or the sophisticated Sauterne, Vin Santo combines lightly oxidative nutty and cherry fruited flavours with herbal bitterness. Great Vin Santo is wonderful for the same reasons as Amaro – it is just far more flexible and satiating than the more common after dinner tipples.

And Vin Santo, well, great versions happen to also just be some of the most delicious wines in Italy – so go seek out a bottle.
